Lot 5958
ISLAMIC. Circa 9th-12th century CE. Seal (Bronze, 15 mm, 1.85 g). Arabic legend in two lines, containing a district name and a personal name: ‘Bājunays / Aḥmad’. Some earthen deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, formed since the 1970s.

Bājunays is the Arabic equivalent of the Armenian district name 'Apahunik', between northern Lake Van and the upper Aracani river, today in eastern Turkey. This district was famous in the Abbasid period for its silver mine. Some of the Abbasid dirhams of AH 190-218 / AD 806-833 bear the mint name ‘Maʿdin Bājunays’, i.e. ‘the mine of Bājunays’.
